On July 2, 1863, the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry charged the Confederates at the Battle of Gettysburg. Outnumbered 6:1, the Minnesotans held back the Confederates for about 15-20 minutes, giving reinforcements time to arrive and secure the Union lines. This was a turning point in the battle and ultimately in the Civil War, as the Union victory at Gettysburg changed the tide in the war. The heroic charge was a pivotal point in our nation's history.

"We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate—we can not consecrate—we can not hallow—this ground.
